The basics
What is a roadworthy certificate?
A roadworthy certificate (RWC) confirms your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by VicRoads. It is not a mechanical warranty or a guarantee the car is in perfect condition — it is a snapshot confirming the vehicle is safe to drive on the day of inspection.
In Victoria, you need a roadworthy certificate to:
- Sell a registered vehicle — the seller must provide a current RWC to the buyer.
- Transfer registration — when ownership changes between private parties.
- Re-register a vehicle — if registration has lapsed or the vehicle was previously unregistered.
- Clear a defect notice — issued by VicRoads or Victoria Police.
A roadworthy is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. Only a licensed vehicle tester (LVT) can perform the inspection and issue the certificate — we are licensed and inspect to the full VicRoads standard.
