The basics

What is a roadworthy certificate?

A roadworthy certificate (RWC) confirms your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by VicRoads. It is not a mechanical warranty or a guarantee the car is in perfect condition — it is a snapshot confirming the vehicle is safe to drive on the day of inspection.

In Victoria, you need a roadworthy certificate to:

  • Sell a registered vehicle — the seller must provide a current RWC to the buyer.
  • Transfer registration — when ownership changes between private parties.
  • Re-register a vehicle — if registration has lapsed or the vehicle was previously unregistered.
  • Clear a defect notice — issued by VicRoads or Victoria Police.

A roadworthy is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. Only a licensed vehicle tester (LVT) can perform the inspection and issue the certificate — we are licensed and inspect to the full VicRoads standard.

If your car fails

What happens if
it doesn't pass?

Not every car passes first time — and that is fine. If yours needs work before we can issue the certificate, here is exactly what happens:

  1. Clear report — We give you a written list of every item that needs rectifying, in plain English. No vague codes, no jargon.
  2. Honest quote — If you want us to do the repairs, we quote them clearly before starting. You are never obligated to use us.
  3. Your choice — You can have the repairs done here, take the car to another workshop, or do the work yourself.
  4. Re-inspection — Once the repairs are done, bring the car back and we re-inspect the failed items. When it passes, we issue the certificate on the spot.

We never upsell repairs that are not needed to pass. If something can safely wait, we will tell you.

Roadworthy certificate — questions

How long does a roadworthy inspection take?

A standard car roadworthy inspection usually takes around 90 minutes. If repairs are needed to pass, we will talk you through them and quote before doing any work.

Do I need a roadworthy certificate to sell my car in Victoria?

Yes. Under Victorian law you need a current roadworthy certificate (RWC) to sell a registered vehicle or transfer registration, unless the sale is between licensed dealers or the car is sold unregistered.

What happens if my car fails the roadworthy?

We give you a clear list of what needs rectifying, quote the repairs, and re-inspect once they are done. You are never obligated to have us do the repairs — you can take the car elsewhere and bring it back for re-inspection.

How long is a roadworthy certificate valid?

A Victorian roadworthy certificate is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. If you do not complete the sale or registration transfer within 30 days, you will need a new inspection.

Can I drive my car without a roadworthy?

You can drive a registered car without a roadworthy certificate for your own use. You only need one when selling, transferring registration, re-registering an unregistered vehicle, or clearing a VicRoads defect notice.

When do I need a roadworthy certificate?

You need a roadworthy in Victoria when selling a registered vehicle, transferring registration to a new owner, re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered, or clearing a vehicle defect notice issued by VicRoads or Victoria Police.

Do you do roadworthy inspections on all vehicles?

We inspect cars and light vehicles (under 4.5 tonnes GVM). We do not currently inspect motorcycles, heavy vehicles or trailers.

How much does a roadworthy cost?

Roadworthy inspection pricing depends on the vehicle type. Call us on 0424 156 703 or send your rego via the contact page and we will give you a clear quote before you book in.
