Warning light guide

What your dashboard is telling you

A warning light is information, not a verdict. Here is what the common ones mean and how urgently you should act.

Check engine (steady)

Book soon

The engine management system has logged a fault — could be emissions, sensors, ignition or fuel. Safe to drive carefully, but get it scanned soon.

Check engine (flashing)

Stop driving

Active misfire or serious fault that can damage the catalytic converter. Stop driving and book it in immediately.

ABS warning

Book soon

The anti-lock braking system has a fault. Normal brakes still work, but ABS will not activate in an emergency stop.

Battery / charging

Same day

The alternator is not charging the battery properly. The car may stall or not restart if you turn it off.

Oil pressure

Stop driving

Low oil pressure — engine damage can happen within minutes. Pull over safely and turn the engine off. Do not drive.

Temperature warning

Stop driving

The engine is overheating. Pull over, let it cool, and check coolant. Driving while overheating causes serious damage.

Code vs cause

A fault code is a
starting point, not
a diagnosis.

Modern cars log faults in their onboard computer. We use proper diagnostic equipment to read those codes, then interpret them with experience — because a code points to a system, not always the exact part.

That difference is what saves you money. A P0420 code says "catalytic converter efficiency low" — but the actual cause could be a failed O2 sensor, an exhaust leak, or the cat itself. Replace the wrong part and you have paid for nothing.

We take the time to trace the real cause so the quote is accurate and the fix lasts.

Read the fault · Find the cause · Explain it plainly

The process

Scan, interpret,
explain.

Three steps to a clear answer. No jargon, no scare tactics — just what is wrong and what to do about it.

Book a scan
  1. 01

    Tell us the symptoms

Which light is on? What is the car doing differently? The more you can describe, the faster we can narrow it down — but don't worry if you are not sure.

  2. 02

    We scan and interpret

We read the fault codes, then interpret them with experience. A code points to a system, not always the exact part — that difference is what saves you money.

  3. 03

    Clear explanation

You get a plain-English report: what the fault is, what is likely causing it, whether it is urgent, and your repair options with a clear quote.

Auto diagnostics — questions

Why is my check-engine light on?

It can be anything from a loose fuel cap or a worn sensor to an engine or emissions fault. The light just means the car has logged a fault code — a diagnostic scan tells us which system is affected so we can investigate properly.

Is it safe to drive with the engine light on?

A steady light usually means you can drive carefully and get it checked soon. A flashing light means stop driving and book it in — keep going and you risk catalytic converter or engine damage. When in doubt, call us.

What is an OBD scan?

OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics. Every car built after 2005 has an OBD-II port. We plug in a scan tool that reads the fault codes your car's computer has logged, then interpret those codes to find the real cause.

Why not just read the code and replace that part?

Because a fault code points to a system, not always the exact part. Code P0420 means the catalytic converter efficiency is low — but the cause could be a failed O2 sensor, an exhaust leak, or the cat itself. Replacing the wrong part wastes money and doesn't fix the problem.

How much does a diagnostic scan cost?

Call us on 0424 156 703 or send your rego via the contact page. We will quote the diagnostic fee up front — and if you go ahead with the repair, the diagnostic cost is usually absorbed into the repair quote.

Can you diagnose intermittent faults?

Yes — intermittent faults are harder but not impossible. We use live data monitoring and freeze-frame data to catch faults that don't show up on a simple code read. Sometimes we need the car for a few hours to replicate the conditions.

Do you clear fault codes after scanning?

We can, but clearing codes without fixing the underlying fault just turns the light off temporarily — it will come back. We always recommend fixing the cause first.

My car has multiple warning lights on — is that serious?

Multiple lights can mean multiple faults or one fault triggering a chain reaction. Either way, get it scanned. We will sort out which is the root cause and which are consequences.
